thank you

the surprise at seeing her majesty's familiar portrait on the stamp again when i opened my mailbox was... hard to describe. it had a special meaning to me as a kid: it meant a letter from my dad. memories are a powerful thing. it was probably the best thing that happened to me all week, i really needed the boost. and i loved the picture, just thought you should know that i'm a sucker for black and white.

sometimes i feel protected and i don't know why.

maybe i do a little now?

thanks for the card. thank you. really.

21 grams

a stack of 5 nickels. a hummingbird. the exact weight of the soul at the moment of death. how much do we lose and how much do we gain in that 21 grams.

you ever hear the story, of mr. faded glory? say he who rides the pony must some day fall. i was talkin' to my alter, says life is what you make it. and if you make it death, well rest your soul away.

wasting time

"you were a disaster from the beginning..." he said.

i don't know what to say. i don't know what to feel. a bad taste in my mouth - of an overwhelming sense of defeat. the tears they fall like rain. i wish i was somewhere else. no one here understands or gives a shit. no one.

cobblestones

my life right now is tantamount to the paris-roubaix. on a good day i'd expect to finish the race if lady luck was on my side. on a bad day, well nothing goes right really.

the little things - daily, weekly routines and obstacles are synonymous with the rough and unforgiving cobblestones of the hell of the north. only those who have the strongest legs will survive. and my legs are just about burning.

but the difference is those who manage to finish in paris-roubaix would be looked upon as some of the best, and those who go on to win are guaranteed immortality in the pages of history. where would i be at the end of my race?

could you still finish the race if you'd crashed and crashed hard? i guess it depends on how much one can suffer. those who can suffer the most are often the survivors. and so i hang on by the skin of my teeth.

c'est la vie.

time

jan 24. cloudy. day 2 of the weekend. and for once i've decided to spend the precious weekend by making time for myself, doing the things that i enjoy doing. like playing music, listening to music, reading. yes reading. i haven't read for so long that i've forgotten what it is like to sit down to enjoy the tranquility that words bring me. and coffee. there's always something about coffee, there's always room for a warm cup of joe that makes me feel so comfortable.

.

jan 21. rain. spent the better part of the day trying not to think about the work that remains incomplete and or untouched. woke up with the feeling of the glass being half empty instead of half full. started work on my dreaming tree.

my dreaming tree. for a good half an hour i was lost as to what to put on it. and then i picked up a post it note and a sharpie and just wrote what would be good advice to anybody out there. "pause for 5 minutes and breathe". and i stuck it on there.

a couple of minutes elapsed. "love thyself".

a picture of coltrane in this weeks time magazine. a post card of sun studio. ticket stub from graceland...

i didn't exactly stop to look at what i've done till lunch time. i've surprised myself. my dreaming tree. it will serve as a source of motivation, a positive distraction, and in times of desperation - a dear friend.

unknown

jan 20th. rain. it's a typical situation. me sitting here staring into the abyss of my mind hoping that when i finally snap out of it, the lab report would have somehow magically written itself.

an hour or two. stuck. then i start thinking about all the good times, those happy memories, those that i can go back to and reminisce about in times like these. what defines our lives? i think it's characterized by a collection of recollections. recollections. funny word. it's what you remember at the end of the day, wouldn't you agree?

imperfect knowledge. it's always the lack of information, either from not paying attention or from people who choose not to share that information. and by the time you get around to that piece of information, it often would've been of no value anymore.

and then there's disappointment. just, disappointment. and finally comes the overture: somewhere, someone hits rewind, followed by play.

films films films

the last couple of days have afforded me with the luxury of time to do some of the things i love and have sorely missed for the past few months.

and last night's golden globe has undoubted affirmed my belief in some of the best films produced this year, or rather last year.

here's the breakdown of those i've seen so far:
  1. food inc
  2. moon
  3. the road
  4. the hurt locker
  5. a single man
  6. 500 days of summer
  7. medicine for melancholy
  8. an education
  9. the messenger
  10. precious: based on the novel push by sapphire (later today)

food for the soul until spring break when i'll get another chance to catch up with so many of the awesome films out there. and just for the record, i was really impressed with avatar having seen it in it's full 3D glory. truly breath taking stuff.

peace

got the house to myself for a few days. time to really relax the body and the soul. some time for myself. music, food and films. and sleep of course. lots of sleep. looking at the breakfast i cooked up, i actually feel a little overly self-indulgent.

scream

rode the city bus from downtown to graceland. And the sights that I saw just somehow made me want to scream "This is America!"
