musical theme of the day: motown.
watching the sun rise is an interesting and challenging exercise in self restraint. on one hand you kinda wanna just go to bed and say "screw this!" while on the other hand you can't wait to see the sky go *bling*. you'd think it'll be a gradual process, but here's where you're wrong. it's usually like someone had suddenly flipped a switch.
so the sun's out, and i'd just broken into a motown medley. what do i do now? ah, a square of dark chocolate hits the tip of my tongue barely 30 seconds into this meandering thought process. problem solved. the remedy.
hello you, thursday. i love thursdays.

today i played slide guitar for the first time, live, outside of my room to a room full of people. i am SO stoked! it's always been a dream of mine to play a little slide guitar, just as an homage to my heroes, the likes of derek trucks, warren haynes, duane allman and so many countless magicians who have wielded the power of the humble apparatus, the slide.
just the sweet sweet sound of the variation in pitch without having to take your hands off the fretboard. it's pure joy in a bottle (literally, because the slide i used is called a blues bottle which is actually a medicine bottle, but that's another story for another day).

dave matthews and tim reynolds live in las vegas. been waiting on that one for a while. i can't get enough of the duo. there's something about the chemistry of those two, and the earnestness of relying solely on acoustic instruments without any embellishments. it's... down to earth. in its rawest form.
sat down to finally learn some new music today. and i found out that playing guitar calms me down. when i feel the anxiety, i just need to pick up the guitar and pluck a tune or two. almost an instant sense of peace.
i present to you: justin king. this is a real piece or work. it's gonna take me a WHILE to learn this.

this is exactly how i'm feeling at this instant. it's like i'm digging myself further and further into the deep end. when that last drop of forget-it-all from the glass empties, then what?
Where all these worries
wear down on me will rise,
Where all these habits
pull heavy at my heart will die...+listening to: digging a ditch by dave matthews band

for the longest time i've been wondering, why can't i get a grip on dream theater's new album. i mean i thought people said it was pretty amazing. some even said that the good ol' dream theater might be back. and today i finally realized why.
so here's what you have to do to get to that good stuff: buy the 3 cd special edition of dark clouds and silver linings (read: NOT the single disc version of album itself), then proceed to throw away the actual album disc, which is disc 1 in the 3 cd edition, and pop the other 2 bonus discs into your media player. voila! instant audio nirvana.
what an ingenius idea! it means only die-hard fans would even bother to get the 3 cd special edition and get to hear the real dream theater and the awesome awesome music that they can churn out. while all those new school wannabe prog metal kids who jumped on the band wagon in the past couple of years can go eat shit and die.
on a slightly different note, i've realized that i haven't bought a record in AGES. can't even remember when was the last time i bought one, probably before summer. the thing about this town is that there's no accessible record shops that you could delve in and just have hours and hours of browsing fun like i used to do at the gramophone shop at peninsula plaza. and no, don't even start with barnes and noble or best buy. the times when i'd skip lunch/recess just to buy a cd by one of my favorite artistes are gone, but those memories are sure as hell sweet as can be.

i listened intently to the lyrics of this particular song for the first time. and it really struck me. it speaks a lot of our collective lives in general.
Lying in the park on a beautiful day
Sunshine in the grass, and the children play
Siren’s passing, fire engine red
Someone’s house is burning down on a day like this
The evening comes and we’re hanging out
On the front step and a car rolls by with the windows rolled down
And that war song is playing, “why can’t we be friends?”
Someone is screaming and crying in the apartment upstairs
Funny the way it is, if you think about it
Somebody’s going hungry and someone else is eating out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
Somebody’s heart is broken and it becomes your favorite song
The way your mouth feels in your lovers kiss
Like a pretty bird on a breeze or water to a fish
A bomb blast brings a building crashing to the floor
You hear the laughter while the children play war
Funny the way it is, if you think about it
One kid walks 10 miles to school, another’s dropping out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
On a soldier’s last breath his baby’s being born
Standing on a bridge, watch the water passing under me
It must’ve been much harder when there was no bridge just water
Now the world is small, remember how it used to be
With mountains and oceans and winters and rivers and stars
Watch the sky, the jet planes, so far out of my reach
Is there someone up there looking down on me?
Boy chase a bird, so close but every time
He’ll never catch her, but he can’t stop trying

friday night and i'm still sober. the night is long, yet i'm here, playing my sweet sweet guitar. listening to the notes ring out. discovering the joy in those little half-steps of mis-intonations.
have i told you how amazing the f chord sound? wait till you hear it right after a g. and there's this strange thing. i have no idea what it is. it's just a mish mash of unrelated notes, tangled fingers. yet the sound it makes... insatiably savory. it sounds like... it wants to go somewhere, yet lingers for a moment to think.
oh they all taste like fine wines. one more drink and i'll move on.

song for friday: #41
the words:
"i will go in this way
and i'll find my own way out
i won't tell you to stay
but i'm coming to much more"
me:
i hold nothing but gratitude. it's really a feeling of appreciation that one cannot describe. thank you thank you thank you thank you... i wished i could go on for the rest of my life, but i'm afraid you'll leave this world without hearing that last one.

song for thursday: stay
the words:
"and it began to rain
oh we were dancing mouths open
splashing tongue taste
for a moment this good time would never end"
me:
doing nothing for the fun of it, a little taste of the good life? i guess it would be oh so sweet like honey. or maybe not. would you stay just a little while longer? so i could scribble in my mind the notes of your hair and have a perfume made. it'll be like wearing you all day.

princes kept the view
while all the women came and went
